The 10 Policies & Practices That All Health Science Programs Should Adopt

A commitment to inclusion requires programs to be thoughtful and purposeful in their approach to the full inclusion of students with disabilities. This is most evident in the policies and practices that programs adopt. Informed by recent litigation, OCR resolutions, progressive practices, and the forthcoming Springer Nature book Disability as Diversity: A Guidebook for Inclusion in Medicine, Nursing, and the Health Professions, the presenters will offer 10 policies and practices that are critical to the inclusion of students with disabilities.

Disability and Wellness: Knowing When and What to Accommodate

Programs often forget to consider accommodations for students with psychological disabilities, instead only referring them to wellness programming or counseling services.
This webinar identifies programmatic pitfalls and referral opportunities related to students with psychological disabilities. Participants will also learn how to navigate the landscape of leave of absence and program re-entry using Department of Justice guidance.
We will review accommodation promising practices for this population, informed by accreditation standards, mental health experts, health science associations, and the books: Medical Student Well-Being: An Essential Guide and the forthcoming book Disability as Diversity: A Guidebook for Inclusion in Medicine, Nursing, and the Health Professions(Springer Nature).

Accommodating students in clinical settings continues to be a source of confusion, with many programs reporting that they simply "do not accommodate clinicals." This is not, however, in keeping with promising practices or legal requirements.
In this webinar, we identify the biggest misconceptions in health science education regarding accommodations for clinical settings and offer approaches that are vetted by health science campuses across the country. We provide answers for some of the most frequently asked questions about clinical accommodations and break down the decision-making process using student case reviews.
